CPSC Announces Position re Lead in Bicycle and Jogger Stroller Parts

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is proceeding on a per category basis to deal with the various provisions in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.  The CPSIA was enacted to eliminate phthalates and reduce the lead limits in children's products. The breadth of what qualifies as children's products is quite broad and includes clothing, toys, games, and other products designed for children 12 and under, although there are also special rules for certain products intended for children 3 and under. It is important to keep in mind these new regulations are in addition to the existing CPSC requirements in such areas as small items which might cause a chocking hazard and existing regulations mandating the reporting of certain types of lawsuits.

Most recently, the CPSC has announced that it will delay enforcement of the lead limitation changes to bicycles parts, jogging strollers and bicycle trailers designed for children 12 and under.  For more details, see http://www.cpsc.gov/businfo/frnotices/fr09/bicycles.pdf
